NYACOL® Introduces New Non-Halogen Flame Retardant

ASHLAND, MA – Nyacol® Nano Technologies, Inc. is pleased to announce the introduction of BurnEx® 608. BurnEx® 608 is a non-halogen flame retardant additive and flame retardant synergist.  The product is a free-flowing white powder with high surface area.

Applications include epoxy and unsaturated polyester laminates, where BurnEx 608 is a synergist with the commonly used phosphorus flame retardant compounds. The use of BurnEx 608 enables the reduction of phosphorus loadings, which helps with laminate properties.  BurnEx 608 is especially appropriate for use in laminates that will use lead-free soldering; the temperature resistance of BurnEx 608 is excellent.

In PC/ABS and PBT flame retardant compounds, small additions of BurnEx 608 act as a drip suppressant, enabling the elimination of the commonly used PTFE additives.

In PP, BurnEx 608 can be used as an endothermic and char-forming flame retardant additive.

BurnEx 608 is available in 5-gallon pails, 100 pound fiber drums, and 2,000 pound bulk bags. Please contact Nyacol for your free sample.

NYACOL Transparent High Refractive Index Sols

Transparent high refractive index materials are of interest as a coating additive for reducing reflection loss in a number of technologically important applications such as coatings for TFT/LCD displays, lens coating and LED lighting. NYACOL offers five material types which are relatively high in refractive index and the particle size is small enough that the dispersion is optically transparent.

The NYACOL materials are hydrous sols, meaning the metal oxide particles contain water of hydration as well as the counter-ion for each material type. The implication of this is that the solid phase is not fully condensed into the corresponding oxide, and the density is lower and the solid phase refractive index is also lower than theoretical. The lower density is advantageous to reduce the weight required to achieve a given volume loading of the metal oxide, counterbalanced by a lower contribution to increased refractive index.

We developed an arbitrary method for estimating the refractive index and density of the solid phase of our sols.  This data is presented below.

Grade/Products Oxide Sol Wt.% Oxide Solid Phase RI Solid Phase Density Carrier Typical Sol NTU as Supplied
SN15 SNO2 15 1.8 4.25 water 22
JL627S Sb2O5 28 1.70 3.09 water 145
Zr10/15 ZrO2 15 1.86 4.01 water 25
TiSol A TiO2 20 2.07 3.22 water 500
Ceria acetate CeO2 20 2.02 5.09 water 213

In formulating the high RI coating, the user will need these parameters to determine the amount of our sol to use to meet a given RI target. The choice of oxide will depend on the chemistry of the coating and the coupling agent options available. We recommend formulating the coating using the volume fractions of the coating components which requires knowledge of the resin density and RI, as well as the solid phase density and RI for the NYACOL sol. Please contact NYACOL to discuss your requirements.

For low refractive index particles, we offer amorphous silica as our lowest refractive index material presently. The amorphous silica has outstanding transparency with a refractive index of the particle of 1.45 and a particle density of 2.2 g/ml.

Clear Fast Reheat (CFR)

PET bottles are produced by injection stretch blow molding of preforms.  The preforms are heated using quartz infrared heaters which have a maximum peak output at 1100 – 1200 nm.  Since PET absorbs this wavelength poorly, additives are put into the PET to improve the absorption of this energy.  These additives are typically carbon black, iron oxide or other so-called black body absorbers.  These additives improve the heat absorption of the polymer, reducing the processing time and energy required for blow molding.  However, these additives are all black or dark and decrease the color of the PET considerably, leading to unattractive containers.

NYACOL has developed an alternative technology using antimony doped tin oxide (ATO).  ATO is part of a class of materials described as transparent conductive oxides.  These materials are transparent in the visible wavelength range, but absorb in the near IR range.  This balance of properties is ideal for use as a clear fast reheat agent.

NYACOL ATO is produced in a patented process.  Particles of 15 – 20 nm tin oxide are prepared and then doped with Sb.  The dopant amount has been optimized to provide the best balance of color and reheat performance.  The particles are crystallized to prepare a dark blue sol and transferred to EG.  The current commercial product is designated SN902.  The material is 20 percent ATO in EG with a measured dispersed size of 50-90 nm.  The small dispersed size enables high transparency and excellent color in PET bottles while the optimized dopant level provides excellent coupling with the quartz IR heater output — leading to fast reheat performance and reduced energy consumption in ISBM.

NYACOL SN902 has been approved by the FDA under FCN1437 for use in PET at dosing levels up to 0.05%, though typical use levels are less than 0.005%. The use of SN902 is approved for all conditions of use.
